A Brief Background On Tennis And Players of Tennis Over The Years
A lot has changed in Tennis over the years. Most of the changes happened around the Eighties, the style of play altered dramatically, as did the racquets.
Let’s just take a look back at some of the great players of the Eighties; not necessarily the best players of the Decade, but still some of the well known players.
The 1980’s has to be synonymous with undoubtedly the greatest ever player to have graced the Tennis courts, that is until his retirement at an early age. This could only be the one and only Bjorn Borg.
One of the great serve and volley players of the Eighties was funnily enough another great Swedish player, Stefan Edberg. He just seemed to be able to serve and volley with ease, and this was a talent that took him to the world’s number one by the late Eighties.
Then there was a young German teenager, with his Jump serve that astonished everybody by going on to win the most famous grass court tournament in the world, yes Wimbledon! Boris Becker was that man, although that was not his only achievement, not by a long way.
Ivan Lendl is the next person that I remember, as this Czech player had an amazing base line play. He was such a steady player, and he also won quite a few tournaments and a few grand slams as well.
The Eighties would not have been the same without John McEnroe, who could ever forget the tantrums that he used to perform on court? Even though he seemed like a big kid at times, he was still one of the greatest players to grace the Tennis courts, and his partnership with Peter Fleming in doubles just goes to show how versatile this man was.
All of these played a major contribution to Tennis in the Eighties, along with many others, but when I think of Eighties Tennis, these are the ones I remember the most.
