Why Ladies’ Tennis Must be Revered

Honestly, why are things this way?

When Steffi Graf dominated the court tennis lovers did not enjoy it. When Venus and Serena Williams were destroying anybody on the road to the title, the media didn’t enjoy it. And presently when championships are up for grabs? Tennis lovers don’t want this.

Most acknowledge that the Williams girls stand above and out of the rest most of the time. However physical issues and abridged non-Slam calendar years mean they presently meet in the draw before the finals. Although once more allow us to keep in mind that very recently the above-mentioned gripes regarding this frequent meeting in the championship and their authority over other athletes.

Thus now we have Dinara Safina boasting the #1 place in the WTA race and the US Open seedings. And what do they say? She has not earned it since she has not won a Grand Slam (not to mention that she has lost in a few grand slam title of late.) But she’s reaching the slam title and she’s rather entertaining along the way, on the court and off.

Earlier Safina had to battle it out once more, virtually becoming the first #1 seed to be beaten in the first round. Was it entertaining? I thought so. However we’ll learn all about the illegitimacy of the rankings procedure, and the rest of that junk.

And then there was Venus Williams last night–also pushed to three pairs. Also compelling. (Also note that Venus did not have the winningest of summers post Wimbledon.) Although likely to be heard is the prevalence of injuries among the sisters Williams and their “distractions” off the courts.

Furthermore now Kim Clijsters is back and instead of being wicked psyched – which we ought to be since she is fun and polite and a talented player – tennis lovers are all saying “well what does this reveal about the women’s game that she could come back and end up with a 6-2 finish during the summer year?”

Well I think it asserts that she – just like she always has -conditions very well. Also that she’s a veteran and she has just about zero to lose.

So let’s just stop all the bashing, please. Yes, there are imperfections in the ladies game. (For example the lack of variety in terms of playing style.) But I for my part love that it’s anyone’s conjecture as to who’ll play in that finals in under two weeks. And I am excited about seeing how they end up there.
